The popularity of the Internet has had a dramatic effect on the way computers are used, and its influence will be even greater in the future. The Internet forms something of an information grid, much like a power grid. Yet that grid, in its current state, is not yet as useful as a power grid. Resources are being wasted: CPUs idle, memory free, disks unfilled. Work needs to be done to more efficiently use the power that is out there. It is the purpose of Project GRID to showcase efforts that do this, looking forward to a future when computing resources are shared like electricity.
